Thought for Friday 9 April 2021
Hebrews 1:3 (New Living Translation)
The Son reflects God’s own glory and everything about him represents God exactly. He sustains the universe by the mighty power of his command. After he died to cleanse us from the stain of sin, he sat down in the place of honour at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
This world seems to be becoming more and more secular as time passes. This change seems to be accelerating.
God has revealed himself to everyone through the beauty of the God-created world in which we live. He has revealed himself through the natural ability of men, women and children to recognise right from wrong, good from bad. He has also revealed himself through scripture.
The book of Hebrews shows how the new covenant is superior to, and indeed, replaces the old covenant. We heard on Wednesday’s thought that many of the early Jewish converts to Christianity insisted on adhering to certain aspects of Jewish law in relation to the way they lived their lives on a day-to-day basis. Jesus is superior to the angels, Jesus is superior to Moses, Jesus is the superior High Priest and the new covenant is superior to and replaces the old covenant.
This book tells us that God has revealed to himself to men in many different ways, he spoke to Abraham directly, to Moses from the burning bush and to all the prophets through dreams and a variety of other ways. None of these people came close to achieving what Jesus achieved during his short, but perfect ministry, although many predicted his coming. In the old testament, the famous people that worked on God’s behalf were described as his servants. Jesus as his son, is the only member of God’s family and the only one who ‘reflects God’s glory’ and the only one that sits at God’s right hand.
Only a week ago, we remembered what Jesus did for us, for the pain and humiliation he went through, for the way he died and for his eternal victory over death on Easter morning. In the new covenant, we are told that Jesus will return. It is up to all of us to do our best to share his story and his message with others until his return.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank you for Springtime, for the signs of new life, for the small splashes of colour in our landscape that point to milder times ahead. We thank you for the activity in nature heralding imminent new births without any assistance or interference by mankind as it has been since your creation. Help our appreciation of these natural miracles we experience every year only increase. Help us all do a better job in making others aware of you Lord, all you have achieved, all you ask from us and all you have promised to us in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
