My good lady and I took the notion for a run down to the coast yesterday and found ourselves at Largs. We normally park the car, get ourselves wrapped up against the cold and walk to the monument near the harbour called ‘the Pencil’ which commemorates the battle of Largs in 1263. Well, it was a bit windy!!! When I say windy, when we took two steps in the direction of the pencil, we ended up taking three steps back and after a few attempts, eventually decided this was not a day for trying to walk in that direction. We then turned around and allowed the wind to blow us in the direction of Nardinis. It was strange to see folks heading in our previous direction that were bent double into the wind or being blown sideways or backwards, it’s honestly the strongest wind I can ever remember experiencing. When we made it as far as the shops, there was one bit when litter was being blown in a circle. When we passed that bit a couple of hours later, the same litter was still being blown in the same circle.
I don’t know how you all react to extreme weather situations, but I quite enjoy them. Rather than hide during a thunderstorm, I love to watch for the lightning strikes and the exceptionally heavy rain. I’ve experienced this abroad and it is even more spectacular and fascinating. When we were driving down, I went via Gourock because it takes you close to the Clyde which by that time, is more sea than river and the waves were creating massive white horses. I wouldn’t have fancied being in a boat while the sea was behaving in that manner.
Hopefully, you don’t mind me sharing this experience with you and while trying to come up with a piece of scripture to relate to, came across the above verse from the Old Testament book of Proverbs. It is only one verse but there are five questions within it. The whole chapter in fact is quite quirky in that it states that there are two/three/four things that ………. do something. Please have a read at this chapter and you will understand what I mean.
Out of the five questions asked in today’s verse, the first and fifth questions seem as if they would fit seamlessly into the New Testament, despite probably being written by King Solomon almost a thousand years before Jesus walked this earth. The remaining three questions remind us that God created this world and all that is therein. The power of the wind, the rain, the lightning, all comes from God. Whether the sea is calm or wild is decided by God. Could it not be the case that we experience these extremes of weather just to remind us of God’s creation and his capabilities? The five questions when taken together demonstrate that the coming of Jesus was no accident and that it had been planned by God many years before and that the plan will only come to fruition when the first question in our reading is answered, Jesus returns and the whole world will get to know the truth.
What a whole lot of information to be contained within one verse! The final sentence asks us all the question that after being given all this information, do we believe it and that is a question that only each one of us can answer.
Thought for week ending 6th February 2026
Proverbs 30:4
Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fists? Who wraps up the ocean in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his name – and his son’s name? Tell me if you know!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, open our eyes to the wonders contained in your Holy Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. Give us the urge to open our bibles and to ask the Holy Spirit through prayer to help us find what the words contained within want to say to us. Help us all get to the stage where we are confident in all that is contained in each page. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, Amen.
