Search me O God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you and lead me along the path of everlasting light.
I’m guessing that we all find difficulty in the concept of God being all around ua at all times whether it be daytime or nighttime, 24/7 from the days before we were born until the day we die and also in the days that come next. This whole chapter in the book of Psalms is excellent at giving us some clarity on this important matter and about giving ourselves as believers a lot to consider and reflect on.
We learn that God knows everything about us every second of each day even to the extent of knowing when we sit down, knowing when we stand up whether we are at home or whether we are out and about and even if we are in another country. The amount of times God thinks about us as individuals cannot be numbered. He thinks about us many, many more times than we ever think of him. He knows what we are going to say even before we have opened our mouths. The Psalmist writes; ‘he blesses us with his presence’ but goes on to qualify his statement by saying; ‘such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand’ and who among us cannot sympathise with the writer? How is it possible for any of us to ever get close to taking all this in?
Maybe this presence is something that we must be respectful and aware of rather than being frightened because we learn that the purpose of this permanent presence of God is to guide us and support us. As per today’s reading, we will all experience periods of anxiety in our lives and it should be comforting to know that God knows of our anxieties. As well as asking for his help through prayer at these times, we should be examining ourselves to see if there is anything we are doing or not doing that might cause him offence and do our best to make the changes in our own lives we should be making.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your love and grace, and that you are our all-knowing God who knew us intimately in our mother's womb and have blessed and scheduled every day of our lives since. We thank you that you are the all-powerful God who has promised to help and protect us, uphold and support us, sustain and defend us, comfort and equip us, heal and help us. We pray that you would search our hearts and reveal to us anything that is hindering our Christian journey and damaging our relationship with you. Cleanse us from our sins, purify our hearts, help us deal with the anxieties of this life and become closer to you. This we ask in Jesus' name, Amen.
