“The law
of Moses could not save us, because of our sinful nature. But God put into effect a different
plan to save us. He sent his own
Son in a human body like ours, except that ours are sinful. God destroyed sin’s control over us by
giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.”
It’s easy
to get lost in the trappings of Christmas but even if we manage to detach
ourselves from all the commercialism that engulfs us and try and hold
true to the Bethlehem story, there are profound messages within that
story that we might fail to recognise.
Jesus as
we all know, was born into this world as a baby and grew into a man and
in the Old Testament prophecy was also to be known as Immanuel or ‘God with
us’ as per Isaiah 7:14. Jesus
was indeed a man subject to the stresses and strains that all of us
experience but was also ‘God with us’.
Jesus was fully man but he was also fully God. He was not a man that became God for
this cannot be possible. He was
God incarnate who walked among us as a man. He had human emotions. He knew joy,
deep sorrow, and even loneliness.
When
you’re going through some challenge or difficulty in your life, it can
be a real benefit or support to talk to someone who has faced a similar
challenge in their own life. Alternatively,
it can be frustrating when someone who knows nothing about what you are
experiencing says ‘I know how you feel’ and offers advice when you know
fine that they have no understanding of what you are going through.
Jesus has experienced
more highs and lows of life than we can ever come close to imagining so
we can be assured that whatever is troubling us, our God knows exactly what
we are going through.
Prayer: Heavenly Father,
We thank you that you have
experience what it is like to walk this earth and live in this world. You know the things that matter to us
and you know the things that make us angry, upset and frustrated. You demonstrated how to live a
perfect life during your ministry in this world and guided us on how to
make the right decisions in our life.
Help us aspire to be more like you in our day to day living.
Amen
