No temptation has
overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not
let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will
also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
You may already have heard about Joe. Joe was good in arithmetic but poor in spelling. Mabel was a fine speller and sat opposite him. On examination day Joe forgot many words, and the tempter said, ‘Look on Mabel’s paper; she has them right!”
So Joe copied several, and the teacher saw him. She intended to talk to him after school, for she always thought Joe was honest. Just then the boy who was collecting the papers came to Joe’s desk, and she saw him tear his up, and say, “I haven’t any!”
She knew he had decided to take a zero rather than hand in a dishonest paper. When the school closed, she called Joe and said, “I saw your struggle, and am proud of a boy who conquered temptation.” From a sermon by Bill Butsko,
Everyone faces temptation, even Jesus had to deal with it in the wilderness. We read, in Matthew chapter 4 how Jesus was able to resist Satan by quoting scripture at him. This chapter also show that Satan knows scripture too, he quoted it to Jesus in verse 6 of this chapter if you would like to check it out.
We have to deal with it every time Satan sets his eyes on us, usually when we seem to be drawing nearer to obedience to God’s wishes. When our Father sets us a task we can be sure Satan will be doing his best to distract us, tempting us to put it off and do something else instead.
There are other ways he tries to get through to us, like when we are tempted to pretend we don’t see that person who talks too much. We ignore the idea that we might be the only person they could speak to that day. We want to get that bus, so we walk past someone who needs help. I could go on with this list but you know what I mean. Temptation doesn’t only affect the wrong things we do but it also affects the right things we neglect to do.
Satan wants us to ignore what God wants us to do, so he diverts our thoughts from the God’s way to his way. Knowing your bible is crucial in the fight against temptation and the only way to know it is by reading it regularly.
Prayer
Almighty God, You know the struggle we have with temptation, You know how hard it is for us. Weak as we are we need Your help every minute of our lives just to keep from slipping off the path Jesus showed us, we know that slip could be just the start of worse to come. Father give us the will to read Your Word eagerly and regularly. Give us also the wisdom to hear You when You speak to us. Amen
