Psalm 49: 5-7 NIVUK
Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked
deceivers surround me –
those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great
riches?
No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for
them –
Before
I start, I need to tell you that I am a billionaire. I own $31,000,000
Zimbabwean…they cost me £20.00. They were being sold as a charity fundraiser for
people of Zimbabwe, so since I always wondered what I would do if I came into a
fortune I bought some. Great wealth! Unfortunately, because of the collapse of
the economy in Zimbabwe and the abandonment of this currency in 2009, my $31
Billion is worthless.
Before
the trouble started I wonder how many people in Rhodesia were wealthy and how
they felt when their wealth disappeared. My cousin stayed in Rhodesia and was
fairly comfortable until he had to come home with very little. That’s the problem
with material wealth, it can disappear in the blink of an eye. People can boast
about their great riches but, as Psalm 49 tells us, riches cannot redeem the
life of someone or pay a ransom to God for them.
God
Himself is the wealth needed to pay our ransom and redeem our lives. He did
this when He joined us on earth in the form of Jesus. We don’t have to do a
thing except accept His sacrifice and believe that He died a brutal death on a
cross then after three days in a tomb He appeared again to His followers. He
now sits beside His Father in heaven. He is the gold and silver that will never
rust or rot, moths will not spoil this treasure and it is ours for the asking.
The
riches we should be storing up will never collapse or need to be abandoned. More
to the point, our treasure will never abandon us. These thoughts are a
testimony to that. I depend on God to give me the subject and help me write it.
I may not follow His thoughts the way He means but these are my interpretation
of them.
The
billions I have are in a frame on my wall, a reminder of how fleeting material
possessions are, if one is ever needed.
Prayer
Father
in Heaven, thank You for the treasures You are storing up for Your people. Help
us to think of those riches instead of fixating on the material world and its
wealth. We look around and see the people who have abundance in this life but
so many of them are still unsatisfied with their lives. We wait patiently for
the reward that is promised to us as we enter our eternal life with You. Amen.
When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had
great wealth.
