Thought 28 June 2021
2 Peter 3:9 (New International version)
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Today’s reading tells us that ‘the Lord is not slow in keeping his promise’ which should instil confidence and patience within each and every one of us. Elsewhere in this chapter it says; ‘With the Lord, a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day’. This demonstrates that the Lord thinks differently from us and, perhaps, the lack of understanding of this difference in thinking may lead some to unbelief or, at the very least, impatience for the Lord to complete his plan.
Peter reminds us to live holy and godly lives as we look forward to his coming. We are to make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. He alludes to the teaching of Paul and how this teaching was down to the wisdom God had given him. Peter writes ‘his letters can be hard to understand’ anyone who distorts the meaning of these letters will be heading for destruction.
This chapter is concluded by reassuring us who believe in God, in Jesus and in the Holy Spirit that we are in a secure position and should grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour with the qualification that we should not be led astray by dishonest men and fall from this secure position.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank you for being a vital daily part of our lives and we thank you that our belief in you means we are in a safe and secure place. Help us never to be distracted by worldly temptation that may make us reconsider this position in our relationship with you. And help us look forward to that new heaven and new earth that we know will come to pass at a time you determine. Amen
