Thought for the Day - Saturday 5 September

Thought for the Day – Saturday 5th September

‘Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.’ (Psalm 90:14)

Okay a question for you today – are you a lark or an owl?

In other words are you a morning person or an evening person?

I have to admit I used to say that I was definitely a lark, definitely a morning person – up bright and early and happily going about my business and so as a result able to get loads accomplished in the morning.

However, it seems as I have got older that I am now much more of an owl than lark. As well as getting older though, I do partially blame my university years for this about turn - all those late nights writing essays and seminar papers and Dissertations certainly turned day into night and morning into evening for me! As a result I now like the quiet of the evening and even well into the early hours of the morning and find I am much more productive in those quiet hours with no distractions to disturb my productivity. Not so good for Graham though who gets disturbed when I do finally decide to go to bed!

So, I suppose I could say that mornings are no longer my favourite time, and I suspect that may be the case for many of you too. Occasionally, you might wake up with a song in your heart and be full of anticipation ready to greet the new day, but probably more often than not the new day is met with a sense of foreboding or perhaps even a groan of dismay as the pressures and responsibilities of daily life weigh heavy upon you.

Yet, every single new day is a gift from God, it is full of immeasurable potential and untold possibilities for us, if only we have eyes to see and ears to hear!

So regardless of whether we are an owl or a lark, we should nonetheless make time when we wake each day to acknowledge God’s goodness to us in giving us a new day and commit the day that lies ahead to him. By doing just this, we are making time to reflect on the wonderful truth at the heart of our faith, namely that God is looking in each and every moment of our lives to offer us new beginnings.

Prayer

Loving Lord,

Every generation has found its home in you, who is the dwelling place of our hearts, minds and souls and have discovered that every moment spent in your presence lasts beyond all imaginable time. We thank you Lord that you watch over us day and night and cradle us tenderly in your loving arms. We thank you for each new day you give us and for each moment within that day that we may use them wisely. Help us to appreciate your gift to us and each morning to commit each day into your loving care. We ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
