Thought for the Day - Saturday 8 August

Thought for the Day – Saturday 8th August

‘O Lord, what a variety of things you have made!  In wisdom you have made them all.  The earth is full of your creatures.  Here is the ocean, vast and wide, teeming with life of every kind, both great and small.’

‘’ (Psalm 104: v24-25)

May and I went down to Largs last Saturday and had a really enjoyable day walking Angus (that’s our Westie for those that don’t know) and generally just enjoying the views across to Millport and the hills and mountains beyond.  I have always loved going to the coast, enjoying the sea air during the day which always ensured a good nights’ sleep.  A few times in my life when some difficult decisions had to be made, I was fortunate enough to be able to take myself to Dunure (just South of Ayr) where I was able to park my car and have a stunning view across to Arran.  Thinking, along with God’s intervention seemed to come easier at this particular spot and by the time it came to leave, I would know what my next step would be.

In all the days I spent at Dunure, Largs and any other coastal locations over the years, I could stare at the sea for ages looking for a sign of the life I knew existed beneath the waves, something dramatic like a big black fin or a dolphin or porpoise or whale or…anything but so far, nothing!  Last Saturday, we were watching a cormorant diving under the water and a couple of times you could see that when it surfaced, it had a small fish in its mouth.  I’ve seen seals at Oban and Burntisland and I’ve seen otters in Mull and Ardnamurchan but in terms of the life that teems beneath the waves, I have seen very little but I know it’s there.

I know where the wonderful tasty things I purchase from the Alhambra come from and I have seen the boats at Ayr coming in with their catch but just looking at the sea gives no indication of the rich and varied life beneath the waves

I guess the point I’m trying to make is: just because you can’t see something doesn’t mean it isn’t there, we just need to be given some sort of proof or someone that has witnessed proof has to tell us about it and after all that, I guess it’s down to faith and trust in the source of the information.

Prayers

Loving God,

Strengthen us when our beliefs are challenged and help us remember all the blessings you have given us and all the times you have touched us in our lives.  Help us to show the love you have given us freely in the way we treat and react with others.  Amen.
