Thought for the Day – Tuesday 14th July
‘As the rain and the snow come
down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making
it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for
the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return
to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for
which I sent it.’ (Isaiah 55: 10-11)
Here is another wee thought on sowing the seeds of love!
Sometimes we feel we are not worthy of sowing those seeds or even not
capable of doing as God asks of us – well it seems we are in good company and
so maybe this will change your mind!
Moses stuttered.
David’s armour didn’t fit.
John Mark was rejected by Paul.
Timothy had ulcers.
Hosea’s wife was a prostitute.
Amos’ only training was in the school of fig-tree pruning.
Jacob was a liar.
David had an affair.
Solomon was too rich.
Jesus was too poor.
Abraham was too old.
David was too young.
Peter was afraid of death.
Lazarus was dead.
John was self-righteous.
Naomi was a widow.
Paul was a murderer.
So was Moses!
Jonah ran from God.
Miriam was a gossip.
Gideon and Thomas both doubted.
Jeremiah was a depressive.
Elijah was burned out.
John the Baptist was a loudmouth.
Martha was a worrier.
Her sister may have been lazy.
Samson had long hair.
Noah got drunk.
Did I mention that Moses had a short fuse?
So did Peter, Paul – well, lots of people did. (Anon)
So you see, lots of people might have thought they were, or think they
are unworthy – however, God is our Father and he freely gifts us according to
his will to enable us to sow his seeds of love. It should be enough for us to
know that he thinks us worthy of the task he has given us – and if he feels we
are worthy then so should we!
So whether we feel worthy or not let us remember the list above and
recognise that we are in good company!
God will work his purpose out and part of his plan is that we sow those
seeds of love for him in order that his kingdom might come.
Prayer
Loving Lord,
You call us to love those whom you would love; to bring wholeness to
lives that are broken; to bring comfort to those who are grieving; to bring
good news to those who are seeking you. Thank you Lord, for giving us the words
to say in all these situations – for your word brings living water to desert
lives – your word blossoms where lives are parched – your word bears fruit
wherever it is sown. May we, however unworthy we may feel, gladly answer your
call on our lives and freely sow seeds of love for you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen
