Thought for the Day – Wednesday 10th June
Psalm 29 offers these words – sometimes entitled ‘The Voice of God in a Great Storm’
‘Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly
beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory
of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendour. The voice of the Lord is over
the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters. The voice
of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of
the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes
Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the
Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord causes the oaks
to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, “Glory!” The
Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with
peace!’
Wow! I don’t think from this ‘Call to Worship’ that we could be left in
any doubt as to the power and might of the voice of God! He spoke and his voice
called creation into being, he is Lord of that creation and rules over that
creation and so is a Lord worthy of our praise and worship!
God rules over us too as part of his creation and he is committed to
being in relationship with us, committed to our salvation, committed to
bringing blessings to our lives – mixed though those blessings may seem to us -
and knowing this should be of great reassurance and comfort to us in our world
where the tides are ever changing and often bring uncertainty with them.
Yesterday brought mixed news in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic, good
news in that those dying from the virus appears to be continuing to decline but
the not so good news was that those who are
‘shielding’ would now be required to do so until the end of July. While
we all know this is for the ‘good of all’, to keep folk safe and protected, it
can still bring a despondent feeling to those who are ‘shielding’ and their
families.
If you are feeling despondent please read those words at the end of the
Psalm once more – they remind us that whatever we are facing God is always in
our lives, he loves us and cares for us so much that he will give us the
strength to get through any uncertain time and if we listen for God’s voice
deep within us and respond to that voice then his peace will come upon us and
be a blessing to us.
May the Lord give strength to his
people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!
Prayer
Loving and healing God,
We come to you in prayer, confident that you are with us and with all your
people in every moment.
We come before you as people of hope, trusting in your care and
protection. May your faithful love support us and soothe the anxiety of our
hearts and may your peace enfold us this day and always. In Jesus’ name we
pray. Amen
