Thought for the Day - Tuesday 30 June

Thought for the Day – Tuesday 30th June
Our reading for today is Psalm 16 and so for a wee change instead of the Bible text, here is a paraphrase of Psalm 16 written by John Bell. It is another hymn from ‘Known, Unknown’ which you can sing to the tune of ‘Love Divine, all loves excelling’.

Keep me, Lord, for in your keeping
I have found security;
and rejoicing in your presence,
know and own my destiny.
You, my God, my cup, my portion
plot my lifeline, chart my days;
Well content with where you place me,
all your providence I praise.

I shall bless the Lord for giving
sound advice for broad daylight;
wisdom for my inmost being
God communicates by night.
So I set the Lord before me
holding fast to each command;
disregarding what dares shake me,
God I keep at my right hand.

Therefore body, mind and spirit
in serenity abound;
death and hell can never menace
those whose faith in God is found.
You, O gracious Lord, will show me
paths to all you have in store;
in your presence, in your purpose,
pleasures last for evermore.

This Psalm follows on so well from the one we reflected on yesterday – we are to trust in God, have faith in him, be confident in that faith; believe that God has your life in his hands, that he brings to our lives at all times sound advice and wisdom and he will never let us go but will see us through difficult times.

Trusting, knowing and believing all this brings hope to our life and by grace God will show us what he has in store for us and will bring a contentment, a joy, a serenity, an inner peace to our minds and to our lives and so we should offer him our praise and thanksgiving.

Prayer

Loving God,
Our protector, our security, our constant presence, guide us by day, teach us by night, be near us always so that nothing can shake us, make us aware of your presence, show us the path that leads to life, let your Spirit fill us with joy and contentment and let our service be your delight for ever. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
