Thought for the Day – Friday 12th June
My goodness, who would believe it is Friday already!
‘So God said to Noah, “…… So make
yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside
and out.’ (Genesis 6:14)
I heard the quote which follows quite recently, I can’t remember now
where I heard it but it really struck a chord with me! The person speaking
said:
‘Professionals built the Titanic
but an amateur built the ark.’
I think this quote has stayed with me because I had never really
thought about this before and because it is so true!
A whole workforce of professionals designed and built the Titanic and
yet this wonderful ship which was to be an outstanding example of its time still
sank on its maiden voyage. A mere amateur, albeit a righteous man name Noah built
the ark and it did exactly as it was designed to do!
I think so often in life we assume that those we consider ‘the
professionals’ will do a better job and that we could never match their
expertise. We assume because they are qualified in some way, perhaps even with
a whole host of letters after their name that they must know what they are
doing and somehow whatever they do will be done ‘better’ than we ever could do
it.
Noah’s story shows us how wrong we are!
We may feel we are mere amateurs called to do God’s work and perhaps
even feel that without that string of letters after our names we are not up to
the task of sharing the Good News and someone else could be doing it better but
how wrong we would be to think in that way. If Noah had done that the ark might
never have been built and the consequences of that would have been
far-reaching!
Our faith tells us that whatever God asks us to do he will equip us to
do – mere amateur or not he will give us the wherewithal to complete our
calling and we should never feel that someone else may be doing it better – or
make that our excuse for not doing something.
Professional or amateur we all have a part to play in sharing the Good
News!
Prayer
Loving God,
You are a wonderful enabling God, your love always welcomes us, your
grace always awaits us, and your spirit enfolds us at all times. May your love
embolden us, may your grace redeem us; may your spirit uplift us that we may be
willing to serve you as you wish us to do. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
Friday Fun Time:
Here are your questions for today!
1. What is your favourite pie?
2. What is your favourite snack?
3. What have you done or bought at any time to make your life simpler?
4. Who has touched your life in special ways?
5. Is there anything about yourself you would like to change?
