Thought for the Day – Wednesday 20th May
All our passages this week have been talking of the gift of the Holy
Spirit being given to us when we love Jesus and choose to walk his way; with that
same Spirit being our helper to live a life of love in order that others might
see God and his love for themselves through us.
So this morning I thought I would simply offer us a hymn of reassurance
as we seek to walk the way of love with the Spirit as our helper. It is from a
new book called ‘Known Unknowns’ which takes known hymn tunes and adds new unknown
contemporary words to them. This one is sung to the tune ‘Love Unknown’ which is the tune of number 399 in our Hymnbook,
(‘My song is love unknown’) and I like its contemporary words because they
reassure us that God’s love, peace, joy and grace will come close to us
whenever we need that love, peace, joy and grace in our lives. It reminds us
too that Jesus too will come close when we love him and ‘where what he said is done with love, as when he came’ or in other
words when we walk his way of love.
So, have a wee sing this morning of ‘The
Love of God comes close’ and let these words of reassurance just wash over
you and fill you anew as you seek to walk his way of love.
The love of God comes close
where stands an open door
to let the stranger in,
to mingle rich and poor:
the love of God is here to stay
embracing those who walk his way.
The peace of God comes close
to those caught in the storm,
forgoing lives of ease
to ease the lives forlorn:
the peace of God is here to stay,
embracing those who walk his way;
The joy of God comes close
where faith encounters fears,
where heights and depths of life
are found through smiles and tears:
the joy of God is here to stay,
embracing those who walk his way.
The grace of God comes close
to those whose grace is spent,
when hearts are tired or sore
and hope is bruised and bent:
the grace of God is here to stay,
embracing those who walk his way.
The Son of God comes close
where people praise his name,
where what he said is done
with love, as when he came;
to those caught in the storm,
forgoing lives of ease
to ease the lives forlorn:
the peace of God is here to stay,
embracing those who walk his way;
The joy of God comes close
where faith encounters fears,
where heights and depths of life
are found through smiles and tears:
the joy of God is here to stay,
embracing those who walk his way.
The grace of God comes close
to those whose grace is spent,
when hearts are tired or sore
and hope is bruised and bent:
the grace of God is here to stay,
embracing those who walk his way.
The Son of God comes close
where people praise his name,
where what he said is done
with love, as when he came;
the Son of God is here to stay,
embracing those who walk his way. ©John L. Bell and Graham Maule Wild Goose Resource Group 2018

Prayer
Loving Lord,
Bring your love, peace, joy and grace to our lives this day that we
might be enabled and encouraged to touch others with that same love, peace, joy
and grace in the knowledge that your Spirit is guiding and leading us in all
that we do. We pray for all who are caught in the storms of this present
lockdown, where faith is meeting fears, where hearts are tired and sore and
hope is waning and perhaps gone. May your love, peace, joy and grace be felt,
indeed your very presence to calm troubled hearts and minds. In Jesus name we
pray. Amen
