Thought for the Day - Friday 15 May

Thought for the Day – Friday 15th May

Friday today, so a much lighter-hearted reading and of course your ‘Friday Fun Questions’ to ponder. Thought I would share some verses from Proverbs today – all really saying the same thing!

‘Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.’ (Proverbs 21: 9)

‘Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife.’ (Proverbs 21: 19)

A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand.’ (Proverbs 27: 15-16)

Of course, as proverbs, I am sure that the word ‘wife’ could well be replaced in these ones by the word husband, son, daughter etc. etc. and still make a wise saying!

It seems to me that people mostly complain about their relatives nagging or being quarrelsome with them when it comes down to getting things done as and when they want them done! Usually it is all those little DIY projects or housekeeping things that pile up and which we all procrastinate about doing a) because we don’t really want to do them or b) because we say we have no time to do them!

As I have been sharing time with you all through my Pastoral phone calls each day it appears to me that there has been a lot of DIY, housekeeping chores, Spring Cleaning, decluttering and all sorts of administration getting done in Holytown, New Stevenston, Newarthill, Carfin, Motherwell and beyond just to pass the time – with the ‘to-do lists’ all but non-existent!

How calm and serene our homes must be then! No nagging going on! No quarrels developing over tasks undone! No-one moving out to live on the roof or in the desert!

Seriously though, we are all finding ‘Lockdown’ a different way of living, a way of living where we have to be in such close proximity to each other for long periods of time, with no one visiting to break up our days, and I suppose this is the very time when nagging and quarrelling could develop quite easily over the smallest of things.

Jack Nicholson in the film ‘Mars Attack’ where the earth is being attacked by Martians says this, ‘Why can’t we all just get along?’

So, let us all make a concerted effort to ‘just get along’ in this time of Lockdown for our own sakes, for the sake of those who live with us and for the sake of our roofs and our deserts!

A Prayer before Silence from Christian Aid

Loving God,

We seek your presence in the silence beyond words looking to you for comfort, strength, protection and reassurance breathing with gratitude, holding on to hope, trusting with faith, that you are still God in the midst of the turmoil and that your love reaches to the ends of the earth. Be present with us now. (Silence) Amen
