Thought for the Day – Monday 20th April
Today’s reading is from 1 Peter 1: 3-9 – a passage entitled ‘A Living Hope’
Blessed be the God and Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a
living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an
inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for
you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation
ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a
little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of
your faith - being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested
by fire -may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus
Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even
though you do not see him now, you believe in him and
rejoice with an
indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your
faith, the salvation of your souls.
How appropriate are these words for us to hear today!
We are blessed people.
We are people who have been given a living hope because Jesus rose from
the dead and has prepared a place in heaven for us.
We, as people of faith, are protected by the power of God until we go
to take that place in heaven.
In the meantime even though we have not seen Jesus and cannot see him
now:
We are to keep loving him.
We are to keep believing in him.
We are to have faith in him and his promise to us.
We are to rejoice – with that ‘indescribable
and glorious joy’ knowing that even if we are going through this time of
trial, or indeed any time of trial, the result of keeping our faith will be the
salvation of our souls and that place with Jesus in heaven.
Prayer
Loving Lord,
We know in our hearts that you are in all things, even our times of
trial, but sometimes we forget, our faith can weaken and we can lose sight of
your promise. Lord, in all times remind us of our living hope and enable us to
share that hope with others that they too might experience the ‘peace, love,
joy and justice’ that you can bring to lives. In the name of our Living Hope we
pray. Amen.
