Thought for the Day - Wednesday 29 April

Thought for the Day – Wednesday 29th April

One of the shortest Psalms in the Bible is Psalm 117 which says this:

Praise the Lord, all you nations!
Extol him, all you peoples!
For great is his steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Praise the Lord!

It may indeed be short but it says it all!

In fact, truthfully there is probably no need for me to say anything more on this today!

However, I will add just one thought!

There are so many conspiracy theories going around at present about this little coronavirus called Covid-19, such as, that it has been manufactured intentionally in one nation to cause mayhem in so many other nations or that it is the ‘wrath of God’ for us not looking after the earth as we should.

Does this Psalm speak of a wrathful God to you?

 It certainly doesn’t to me!

I truly believe his steadfast love is surrounding us, that he is grieving the loss of so many lives to this little virus as much as we are, that he is present with everyone working to overcome this virus in all settings – on the frontline and in laboratories up and down this land, that he is with everyone in hospital, in their own homes, in their isolation, in their workplace each and every moment because his faithfulness to his humanity which he created is constant and unfailing --- and he loves us so much.

Such steadfast love and unfailing faithfulness is surely then worthy of the worship this Psalm encourages us to give.

Such steadfast love and unfailing faithfulness is daily bringing to us little glimmers of hope – tiny as they may be – but nonetheless each one worthy of praise. So:

Praise the Lord, all you nations!
Extol him, all you peoples!
For great is his steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Praise the Lord!

Prayer

Loving Lord,

Thank you for your steadfast love, thank you for your unfailing care and concern, thank you that we can look to you and know our world and our lives are in your hands at all times. May we in our thankfulness bring you our praise; and in our care and concern for others bring before you now all those we hold in our hearts at this time – all those known and unknown who need assurance of your steadfast love and faithfulness to them. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
