Thought for the Day – Thursday 23rd April
The reading today is Psalm 133 – ‘The Blessedness of Unity’
How very good and pleasant it is when
kindred live together in unity!
It is like the precious oil on
the head, running down upon the beard,
on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the Lord ordained his blessing, life for evermore.
on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the Lord ordained his blessing, life for evermore.
‘We are all in this together’ is a favourite phrase of those who deliver
our daily coronavirus updates, recognising that if we are all working together,
working in unity, working together to keep to the rules, working as hard as we
can to thwart this little virus living among us then it may indeed be
controlled much quicker than expected – flattening the curve as they say - and
perhaps allowing us to return at some point in the future to a ‘new normal’.
Yet from our reading today, we can see that working together is nothing
new, it is not a new idea or a new response, for here we see that all those
years ago the Psalmist was talking of how wonderful it is when unity prevails. He
talks of the world being good and pleasant, being in harmony when all of its
people work as one – and what wonderful images he uses of that precious
overflowing oil and the freshness of the dew on the mountains.
Of course, he also tells us that that spirit of unity also brings a
blessedness – and life for evermore!
It is wonderful to see, during this uncertain time, that people do seem
to be working more in unity – people who often thought more of themselves than
of others are all coming together for the good of all and that certainly is bringing
a blessedness to our world.
My hope and prayer is that this spirit of unity will continue after
lockdown and not just among our church community or the communities we live in
but indeed that it would also extend beyond these shores of ours to the world
at large making the world a good and pleasant place to live and bringing that
harmony and blessedness to our world.
Let’s all make this our prayer for today.
Prayer
Loving Lord,
How good and pleasant it is to be drawn together by you as brothers and
sisters in Christ. We know how much stronger we are when we work together and
how much stronger we are when we are in relationship with you and working with
you in the world. So empower us anew Lord with your Spirit, give us a
willingness to work together and the confidence to reach out to others in unity
for the good of all, that together we may all feel your blessedness, a peace in
our lives and harmony in our world. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
