I Corinthians 10:13

But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience.

And God is faithful.  He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it.  When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give into it.

I suppose we all, from time to time, get flashbacks to things that happened in our lives when we were young.  One that came back to me was the statement on one particular report card I received where the teacher had written, among other things, that I tended to be ‘easily distracted’.  My suspicions are that I might not be the only one that had that statement on their report card.  If I had to have a report card written concerning the tasks I plan to complete these days, I suspect that it might still contain those same words.

Even as I sit writing this, my phone dings and there is a new message waiting to be read.  Although I know through experience that the majority of these alerts are about messages that are completely meaningless, I’m still curious if it might be something that I should be responding to.

There are lots of good sites online that can help with the preparation of these articles but when you go to them, adverts pop up.  Some of these adverts will be for things I would never be interested in but more and more frequently, the adverts that pop up are for things that I might well be interested in.  Obviously, the types of web pages we access are analysed by advertisers and we are targeted accordingly.

At other times, I’ll be doing something on the computer or in the kitchen when the phone will ring, someone will come to the door or I remember that I’m on dinner duty so I have to head to the supermarket or start peeling the potatoes and vegetables etc.

As technology becomes more entwined in our lives, it demands more of our time every day.  Sometimes I find that all that is left for God is a prayer crammed into a minute or less before turning over and going to sleep or switching the bedroom tv on or getting back into facebook once again to see what’s new. Another major source of distraction is our thoughts – all the (at times) strange thoughts and ideas that pop into our minds, seemingly at random.  However, what we can do is to consider carefully those thoughts that may affect those around us whether it be in our personal relationships or our business relationships.

Some would say that anything that detracts us from reading the word of God, or prevents us coming to the Lord in prayer, or gives us an excuse not to do work for the church or doing the things that God would approve of is the work of the devil, and its hard to argue against that view.  Today’s reading reminds us that we will never be tested beyond or capabilities, and that if we find ourselves in a difficult situation because of the things we have done or the words we have spoken, God will always help us find a way out and find our way back to him.

Prayer – Merciful and compassionate God, you are the solid rock upon which our salvation depends.  We praise and thank you for being there for us every second of each day.  All we have to do is reach out to you through prayer and you will send your Holy Spirit to take whatever action is necessary.  You are the God who is always near us and a God who understands the temptations and distractions set before us each day of our lives.    Lord help us not to be distracted from your word.  Amen 10:13But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience.  And God is faithful.  He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it.  When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give into it.
